KANDIA

THE VILLAGE

Candia is a village near the sea located in the prefecture of Argolida, built on the coastside of Argolida Bay, between Iria and Drepano. It is characterized as a favorite destination for young and older people, far away from the noisy city.

In the village the visitor can enjoy the calm sea and a lot of beach bar. Also, in the village the visitor can find a super market, a bakery and many restaurants and taverns, where one can enjoy fresh fish and other local delicious dishes.

CANDIA BEACH

It is a sandy beach, broad in distance, and organized with sunbeds, beach bars, restaurants, shower units and free parking. The calm sea is ideal for refreshing and comfortable swimming. Moreover, the visitor can enjoy the beautiful sunset.

For those who seek alternative choices for entertainment, there can enjoy amazing routes by bike or on foot in an idyllic agricultural scenery of the greek nature. Your stay here is going to be rather comfortable, in fully equipped places in logical prices.

THE  MONASTERY OF AUGO
One of the most interesting points of Argolida is the Monastery of Augo. There is not only religious interest in visiting the place, since it had played an important role in the historic times of the greek nation. Moreover, there is also an enviromental interest in visiting this place, as it is located in a compelling point surrounded with astonishing view, near the most wonderful canyon of Argolida.

The monastery is located in the north side of the mountain Augo, in the northeast of the prefecture, near the valley of the Rados river , a point that the locals call “Rocks”. You can reach the monastery following a dirt road 10 km from the village Pelei that is found on the provincial road of Lygourio-Kranidi.  

It is a gorgeous rout that one can enjoy also by bike. The road follows the rout of the river which at some point crosses across, before it meets the mountain and passes through the woods in a rather high altitude. Before the visitor passes the river, sees the picture of the monastery as it is built in a huge vertical rock, literally like an eagle’s nest.
The Monastery belongs to the Byzantine antiquities of the area, is an excellent example of monastery of rocks and it has been declared as an historical listed monument since 1925. The wall paintings in the east side of the rock date back to 11nth century.

The Monastery took place in the rebellion of 1821. It was burnt down by a Turkish conqueror on the 15th  of June 1825 and reoperated after the end of the rebellion. The government decided to dissolve its operation parallel to four other monasteries of Argolida. It was entirely burnt down in 1854.
 

NAFPLIO
Just a few kilometers far from Dimitra Apartments one can find the capital of the prefecture, Nafplio. It is one of the most picturesque cities of the country and it used to be the capital of Greece the years of 1828-1833.
Nafplio is well known for Bourtzi, a small fort built on a small island inside the harbor, for Palamidi, a Venice fort, for Akronafplia and as the place where Ioannis Kapodistrias was murdered.

According to greek mythology, Nafplios built Nafplia in the position where the city stands today. Nafplia was forted with walls. Archaeological findings prove the existence of the city since the first years of the period of Copper.
Nafplio is a popular destination for people who live in Athens and in Peloponnese, since it is located nearby these areas. The  Armansberg House, the house of the ANTIVASILEA of Greece, and the archaeological Museum are included in the most wonderful buildings of the city. In addition, one can find annex of the National Gallery.

 

CELEBRATION OF ARTICHOKE IN IRIA
Aside to the coast on foot or by bike you can easily reach the village of Iria. The celebration of artichoke every May is for the village an important event, since this vegetable is the basic product the area produces. The feast includes traditional dances and music and many recipes with main ingredient this product. The visitor takes the opportunity to taste the artichokes cooked in many ways from the local people. The feast takes place in the main square of the village. 


MIKINES
Mikines is a region 20 minutes far from Dimitra Apartments. This area used to be an ancient city of Argolis near the mountain Tritos and the Argolic Bay. It is known that Homer described the city in his poems as “welfare and beautiful”.
From the remaining ruins the most important are the kings’ grades, part of the prehistoric cemetery, from which are originated the spectacular findings, the treasure of Atreas (grade), the grade of Klitemnistra, the Gate of Lions, the kings palace, the temple, the North Gate and the underground tank. Many of the findings that were found from the archaeological investigations in Mikines are exposed in the National and Archaeological Museum of Athens and in the new and state of the art Museum of Mikines.

KANDIA – THREE PRELATES’ CHURCH
In Candia someone can find Three Prelates’ Church, that are annually celebrated with every honor.
The three Prelates made great effort in every aspect of mental life. They managed to achieve high levels of sanctity with personal effort and with the help of God. They also motivated the people to achieve high mental levels.
They devoted much time and effort in charities and helped many people that faced problems.
They taught the people the truth of God by analyzing the big issues that are related to human soul.
They defined the operation of the Church, so as for the people to be able to pay honor to God.

IRIA – HOLY MARY’S CHURCH
The Church of Holy Mary is the biggest and the newest in construction church of the village of Iria. The place where the temple is constructed in, was an old enough church that everyone remembers.
